2009 – International Year of Astronomy!

What is International Year of Astronomy (IYA)?

IYA is a global celebration of astronomy, a series of events and activities are taking place throughout 2009 on a local, regional, national and international basis. It is intended to achieve a worldwide interest in astronomy and science and to get as many people as possible involved, especially young people. Astronomers all over the world will be inviting you, your family and friends to look up at the night sky and see for yourself the wonders that are up there.

Why 2009?
2009 has been chosen as the year to hold this global series of events as a celebration to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s use of a telescope to study the night sky.

And Wycombe Astronomical Society will be joining in with this celebration! On the 3rd of October 2009 we will be holding an all day event at Woodrow High House, aimed at getting the general public of south Buckinghamshire involved in astronomy.
